Track Day Policies, Procedures and Guidelines

The below listed rules apply to everyone participating in the track day. It is advisable for anyone planning to attend the track day (even if only as an observer) to read them.

Let's get the nasty stuff out of the way first...the following violations will result in your immediate removal from the track and end your day:

  • Passing where not allowed

  • Ignoring a black or red flag

  • Receiving a 3rd warning for safety violations from a track steward

The following will result in your receiving a warning, which will be administered by a track steward in the pits:

  • Following too closely

  • Failure to allow a faster driver to pass despite proper signaling from said driver or a track worker

  • Obvious reckless driving (We realize this is a time to test your limits and will give appropriate latitude for finding those limits)

  • Ignoring a white flag

Safety Equipment: While we will be lapping the track at speed, it is not necessary for your car to be equipped as a race car in order to participate. The following items are required safety items for participation in the track day:

  • Helmet rated Snell M90 or higher.

  • Long sleeve cotton shirt

  • Long cotton pants

  • Shoes with cotton socks

  • Roll bar (Open roof cars only - Defined as any car without a B pillar hoop)

  • Functioning seat belt for all occupants

Flags:

  • Black: Slow down and enter the pits at the completion of this lap

  • White: Lapping session is over. All cars slow down and enter the pits at the completion of this lap

  • Red: Incident on course resulting in an unsafe condition. Slow your car as quickly as you can in a safe manner and proceed at a walking pace until signaled otherwise.

  • Green: Open lapping session in progress. Proceed at speed

  • Blue with Yellow stripe: Slow and pull to the right to allow a faster car by

On track procedures:

  • Leaving the Pits: The maximum number of cars permitted on track at one time is 5. If there is an opening on track, proceed to the end of the pits and wait until there are no cars on the front straight before entering the track. In the event that a worker is stationed at the end of pit lane, that worker will signal when it is safe for you to enter the track.

  • Passing: Passing is allowed ONLY on the front and back straights and ONLY with the acknowledgment of the driver to be passed. If a driver does not move aside, a track worker will signal the need with a Blue flag. If you are being signaled for a pass, pull to the right, raise your left arm in the air outside of the car and slow until the car behind has passed and is a safe distance in front of you. Just because you're faster on the straights does not entitle you to the front position - pull over and let the car by. Once the driver in front has acknowledged the signals, pull to the left and execute the pass as quickly as possible. Once the pass is completed, proceed at speed. Failure to allow a faster car by will result in a Black flag.

  • Incidents: Cars spinning off of the track surface are a normal occurrence when drivers are testing their limits and abilities. We will be administering a 'spin and in' policy where you return to the pits if you leave the track surface. This is not a punishment, but a chance for you to collect yourself and for the track steward to ensure that there is no damage to your vehicle or psyche. Should you witness a car going off, slow until you are clear of the incident and then proceed at speed. If your car is the one exiting the track surface, stop it as quickly and safely as possible and slowly make your way back to the track (if you start to spin, put both feet in). Re-enter the track only when there is sufficient room for you to get back up to speed without hindering others or creating an unsafe condition. If you witness an accident (rollover or car exiting the track into the trees), assume a red flag condition, slow your car to a walking pace and proceed to the pits. If you are in the immediate vicinity of the accident and can stop your car safely and off of the track surface, proceed to the accident vehicle and administer aid until rescue workers and track officials arrive.

  • Cool Down Lap: At the end of each lapping session, the white flag will be displayed to signal that the session is over. Upon seeing the white flag, slow your car to 45mph or less and proceed to the pits. This will allow your brakes and engine some time to cool and ensures that all vehicles leave the track in a safe manner. Failure to heed a White flag will result in a Black flag and subsequent warning.

  • Entering the pits: It is highly recommended that you conduct a cool down lap prior to entering the pits so that your brakes will have a chance to vent some heat before you park your car. If you intend to enter the pits, reduce your speed during the lap prior to entering and remain to the right when exiting the corner prior to the pit entrance. Enter the pits at 30mph or less and reduce your speed to a walking pace once in the pit lane.

  • The pit speed limit is 5mph.

  • Situational Awareness: We cannot cover ever eventuality. Things happen quickly on track and you must be attuned to your surroundings and prepared to react appropriately. Keep your wits about you and pay attention to what others on the track are doing.

Passengers: We highly encourage you to take passengers on the track if that is your desire. All passengers must be at least 12 years of age, helmeted, properly dressed and properly restrained within the vehicle. Ensure that passengers keep their arms inside the car at all times.

Observers: There is a grand stand at the track as well as a fairly large parking area. If you are there simply to observe the track day or commune with other MR2 owners, please remain behind the fence separating the track area from the parking area. Do not enter the pits unless you have business to conduct there - it is not a gathering place. Should you desire to film the track event or witness it from close-up, you must have a spotter with you and your presence inside the track fence must be approved by the Track Coordinator or one of his assistants.
